【単語】toady

toady は「おべっか使いの(=apple-polisher, sycophant)」を意味します。


カエルとは関係ありませんが、


「a toady toad (おべっか使いの嫌な奴)」と覚えましょう!😾  🐸🖐


☆toad には、「嫌な奴」の意味もあります。

【単語】snag と snug

snag  は「折れた枝、思わぬ障害(= trap, pitfall)」を意味します。


snug は「心地よい(=comfortable, comfy, cozy, cushy)」を意味します。


覚え方は、


snag の nag は、「小言を言う」の意味の他に、nag at 〜の形で「〜の障害となる」を意味するとので、snag を連想できると思います。


snug は、「u」の形を入れ物のように考えて、その中でぬくぬくしている人をイメージするとよいと思います。

【単語】expunge と expurgate


こんばんは。


 expel は「〜を追い出す」を意味しますね。

名詞形は、expulsion 「排除」です。


今回は、"expu"がついた仲間の単語を二つ覚えます。「排除」の語感が共通します。



・expunge 

〜を抹消する(=eradicate)



・expurgate 

(本の不要な箇所を公表前に)削除する(=red-pencil, censor)

【色々】英語を学んでよかったこと

こんばんは。久しぶりの更新です。正月に休みすぎて更新できず、罪悪感で始まった一年でした。

 

いきなり結論ですが、英語を学んでいて海外の良質の番組を視聴できることができ、教養を高めることができてうれしく感じています。

 

実家には「青春18切符」で帰りました。電車の中ではTEDや英語のドキュメンタリーを視て充実した時間を過ごしました。モバイルバッテリーが大活躍でした。

 

私は10年前からテレビをもっていないのですが、実家でテレビを視て違和感を多く感じました。

 

それは、良質の番組がないことです。英語の動画ではBBCのドキュメンタリーなど教養になる番組がたくさんありますが、日本の民放ではほとんどありません。最近では、NHKもなぜが民放のように受けを狙った番組を作るようになりました。

 

また、日本のテレビではテロップや効果音など、ごちゃごちゃしていて視ていてとても疲れ、視聴した後もほとんど知識が残らない状況です。

 

高給取りのマスコミの人たちが視聴者に文化や教養をあえて与えないようにしているようにも感じます...(日本人白痴化計画?)。

 

賛否両論あるかと思いますが、今年も良質の番組で教養と英語力をつけていきたいです。

【書く】 Lang-8の添削をきちんとものにする

こんばんは。Lang-8の進捗はいかがですか?私は、添削してもらった後にそのままにしないようし、内容をワードファイルに再度まとめています。

 

・自分の文章を上に、添削後の文章を下に書く。

・添削個所を下線付きの赤色でマークする。

・コメント等は緑色でマークする。

・ある程度たまったら、pdf形式で保存し、自分のスマーフォンに送る。

・通勤時や空き時間にpdfを眺めて理解する。

 

以下は、pdfではありませんが、ワードファイルにまとめた例です。ご参考になるとありがたいです。また、ノンネイティブの英検一級取得者の英文がこの程度と感じていただけると嬉しいです。

【色々】日本人のマナー

海外で2年間生活し、日本を少し客観的に見ることができるようになりました。今回、日本人のマナーについて感じたことを書きます。

 

日本人は礼儀正しいといわれていますが、私はあまりそうは思いません。とくに普段の生活で感じます。こちらの関東圏の混雑した駅では人が我が物顔で突進してきますし、ぶつかったら舌打ちをされることもしばしばです。

 

また、次に来る人のためにドアを抑えておいてもお礼を言ってくれる人は10人に1人くらいです。いずれもとくに、若い女性のマナーの悪さが際立っています。

 

イギリスでは、ほぼ100%、ぶつかりそうになったら謝ってもらえましたし、ドアを抑えていると"Thank you." や "Cheers" と言ってくれました。

 

日本人がマナーが良くなる状況といえば、職場の中や、店などでサービスを提供する側として働いているときが多いと思います。

 

帰国して1年半になりますが、まだなじめずに違和感がある感じです。

 

明るい内容ではありませんでしたが、お読みいただいてありがとうございます。
